Canopy and Understory

UNIQUE PRODUCTS FROM THE RAINFOREST OF HOME

Canopy and Understory has paused business as of the COVID pandemic until further notice.

Canopy and Understory was created in 2018 to showcase the bounty of forests managed to support clean air and water, healthy trees and forest floors, carbon storage, and vibrant rural communities.

The first edible, non‐timber product launched by Canopy and Understory is a line of wild foraged berry fruit spreads featuring salal berries as the main ingredient. The iconic salal plant grows deep in the understory of native forests in the Pacific Northwest and is known both for its nutrient-rich berries as well as its beautiful green foliage. Harvesting of berries is done primarily by Latino foragers for whom berry harvesting is a welcome opportunity in summer months when typical forest employment opportunities, such as tree planting and precommercial thinning, are generally unavailable. In addition, wild foraging provides opportunities for women who are often excluded from employment in the forest sector.

Canopy and Understory Wild Salal Fruit Spreads bring you flavors and aromatics reminiscent of walking through the coastal rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. Our fruit spreads have a simple ingredient list featuring organic sugar, organic lemon and pectin with no additives or preservatives.
